Chapter Thirteen

The helicopter made landfall near Faneuil Hall Marketplace at an altitude of one thousand feet. Alissa glanced out the side window. Thousands of deaders filled the streets. As one, their heads turned up and focused on the Seahawk. Some reached up. Most of them followed the helicopter inland.

“That’s not good,” Alissa spoke into her microphone. “We’re going to attract them all to the hospital.”

“Don’t worry, ma’am,” said Robson. “We have that covered.”

As if on cue, every siren on the Iwo Jima went off at once. Alissa could hear the electronic wail inside the cabin even with her helmet on. Outside, the noise could be heard for miles. For the thousands of deaders roaming the streets of Boston, it was a call to dinner. The living dead turned their attention from the helicopter and wandered toward shore, hoping the sound meant food. None of them paid any attention to the humans flying overhead.

A minute later, Robson announced, “Mass General is dead ahead. There is no, repeat, no activity visible on the roof.”

“Excellent,” responded Gibson. “You have permission to set down.”

“Roger that.”

Robson maneuvered the Seahawk over the building’s roof, hovered for a few seconds, then landed. As Bellamah slid open the port troop door, the team placed goggles over their eyes. Gibson’s Marines jumped out and formed a semi-circle around the hatch, their weapons raised into the high-ready position. Once certain the coast was clear, Dobyns waved for the civilians to follow. Duprau jumped out and rook up position to protect the Seahawk.

“Wait here until we get back,” Gibson ordered Robson. “We shouldn’t be long.”

“I’ll keep the meter running.”

Gibson jumped out of the helicopter and approached Alissa. “Where to now?”

Alissa pointed to a small structure with a door in it. “Over there. That’s the stairwell leading into the hospital.”

“On my six, Marines.”

As they neared the stairs, Alissa noticed a pair of legs extending from behind the rear wall. “Hang on a minute.”

“Make it quick,” ordered Gibson.

Alissa circled around behind the structure. A small body lay beneath a bathrobe, the portion covering the head stained with dried blood. To its right, Courtney, the nurse she had met on the roof during her escape, sat against the wall, her mouth agape. She clutched the Glock Alissa had given her in her right hand, the top of her head blown open. A splatter pattern of blood and brains clung to the wall. Alissa crouched and pulled back the top of the bathrobe. Stella lay beneath it, a single bullet wound in the back of her skull and her face shattered by the exiting round. Courtney had shot Stella from behind, gave the body as proper a burial as possible under the circumstances, and then took her own life. Alissa placed the bathrobe back over Stella’s head and prayed for their souls.

“Did you know them?” asked Gibson from behind her.

“Briefly, yes.”

“Sorry for your loss.” The sympathetic tone became more demanding. “We need to keep moving.”

“I understand.” Alissa stood and headed for the stairs.

The Marines stacked up in front of the door to the stairwell, lined up to enter one after another.
